Intarsia Wood and ArtIntarsia wood working TV cabinet
Intarsia is a challenging craft to learn yet very rewarding. Scroll sawing requires attention to detail especially while cutting out any intricate wood parts. This is all learned skills, the more you do it the easier and more automatic this craft becomes. Intarsia woodworking, like many other things, has different skill levels. Much of the intarsia work presented here is the flat panel style of woodworking. This style of scroll saw woodworking lends it's self to be easily adapted for use as a decorative panel or overlay in custom cabinetry or custom furniture. Using intarsia this way requires some higher woodworking skill levels if your going to be building custom furniture to apply it to.

These furniture pieces will also require more advanced tools than the average hobbyist may have. Don't despair, wood working tools can be added to your collection a little at a time.
We will be exploring the woodworking tools needed, such as wood planers, table saws, band saws, cordless drills sanders, and computer software.
Intarsia Insert for Fireplace Mantel
Scroll sawed intarsia insert used for decoration on this fireplace mantel....designer Jerry Mifflin
Intarsia was used for this display mantel and fireplace surround for the lobby of Phoenix Woodworking Corporation which does custom woodworking for the northern Illinois area.
The mantel was painstakingly constructed by intarsia artisan cabinetmaker Stan Michals.

Built of cherry wood with birdseye maple accents, this fireplace mantel is a project that takes some time to build due to the many details involved. The sides are mitered columns with fluted overlays, all staying within the design theme of the room.

"Intarsia Woodworking"

"Intarsia doors" is what I was thinking when I saw this cabinet laying in pieces in an old barn.  First I took off the old finish,intarsia_cabinet then cut out some of the wood structure inside the cabinet that I didn't want so I would have room for new stereo components.  Then I repaired and glued up all the loose parts of the cabinet box. Next I sketched a intarsia design for the doors and enlarged it to fit the size of the doors.
I cut the pieces for the intarsia design, stained, glued up and finished the doors off the cabinet. After sanding very well to make sure all the old finish was gone, I stained and lacquered the body of the cabinet. The doors are split down the center like normal, along the straight stem of the flower, unlike some of my doors where the opening depends on the picture lines. This was an old "RCA" record player cabinet that's now "Reborn".

" Hawks Dream"

Hawks Dream intarsia woodworking project
This intarsia design was inlaid into a painted background of rolling hills ( what you see here is a cropped and black painted version). The theme is a hawk ( the larger bird ) flying over the Midwest hills dreaming of being an eagle soaring high through the mountains.
This is the cover page for my E-Book ......
